Packing your DofE rucksack: part one
The complete guide for a comfortable Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition.
Introduction
Your rucksack is more than just a bag - it’s your mobile home for the duration of your expedition. Pack it well, and you’ll move efficiently, stay comfortable, and be prepared for anything the expedition throws at you. You need to determine what is essential and what would be a luxury - remembering, whatever you pack you carry!
This guide covers the specific items you’ll need and the best way to pack them for your DofE expedition.
Choosing the right rucksack
Before you even start packing, make sure your rucksack:
- is 65–75 litres (enough capacity for multi-day expeditions)
- has an adjustable back system to fit your height
- has padded shoulder straps and hip belt for comfort
- has a waterproof cover included, or purchased separately.
Tip: practice walking with your rucksack fully loaded before the big day - your shoulders will thank you!
What to pack: the DofE essentials
Aim not to carry more than a quarter of your body weight, or 30lb/14kg, whichever is the lighter (pack using a set of scales). Pack all your kit into plastic bags or dry bags and label everything that is not obvious. Line your rucksack with a large plastic bag or rubble sack.
Break your kit into four categories:
1. Sleeping and shelter
- Sleeping bag (in a waterproof stuff sack).
- Sleeping mat (roll-up or inflatable).
- Tent (shared between team members).
2. Clothing
- Base layers (moisture-wicking).
- Mid layers (fleece or lightweight jumper).
- Waterproof jacket and trousers.
- Spare socks and underwear (in dry bags).
- Hat and gloves (even in summer — UK weather is unpredictable!).
3. Food and cooking
- Trangia Stoves (includes Stove and all pans).
- Matches/lighter (in waterproof container).
- Utensils.
- Mug, bowl, and spork.
- Food for each day (plus emergency rations).
4. Navigation and safety
- Map and compass.
- First aid kit (personal and group).
- Whistle and headtorch (with spare batteries).
- Sunscreen and insect repellent.
- Mobile phone (sealed in a waterproof case, for emergency use only).
