Child Protection and Designated Safeguarding Lead Training for Childminders 2025-26

This E-learning course has been developed by the LADO Education Safeguarding Advisory Service to enable childminders and their supporting staff to understand and carry out their statutory responsibilities as highlighted within the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ (EYFS) 2025 and ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’.


This course explores the specific procedures and support available in Kent, including the Kent Safeguarding Children Multi-Agency Partnership (KSCMP) Levels of Support, Integrated Children’s Services and the ‘Front Door’.


Registered Childminders outside of Kent can access this course, however, they will need to undertake independent research to ensure they understand their own local guidance and processes.

Please note:

  • Your licence for the course lasts until 31 August 2026.

  • The course should take two to three hours to complete.

  • This course currently reflects the EYFS 2025 guidance.

This course is only for eligible/registered Childminders.

  • To enable you to act as a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) within your provision.

  • To understand how to identify signs of the main categories of abuse, harm and neglect and other safeguarding issues in line with current legislation and national and local guidance.

  • To explore your responsibilities to respond and effectively refer concerns or allegations related to safeguarding in a timely and appropriate way.

  • To explore local child protection procedures and how to liaise with and refer to local statutory children's services agencies, including escalating concerns in line with the local safeguarding partnership arrangements.

  • To explore guidance and consider best practice to support Childminders in building a safer organisational culture, including safer recruitment practices and managing allegations of abuse against staff.

  • To consider the importance of internet (online) safety.

This course will enable registered Childminders to:

  • Understand or revisit and update their knowledge of national legislation, policies and professional practice guidance pertaining to safeguarding children.
  • Explore the local Kent’s child protection procedures, including the liaison with local statutory children’s services, the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) and the local safeguarding partners.
  • Reflect, analyse and improve their own safeguarding practice, including builder safer organisational cultures.
  • What is meant by Safeguarding.

  • The main categories of abuse, harm and neglect.

  • The factors, situation and actions that could lead or contribute to abuse, harm or neglect and how to work in ways that safeguarding children.

  • Multi-Agency Working and Local Kent Processes.

  • Online/Internet Safety.

  • Safer organisational culture, including implementing safeguarding policies and procedures.

  • Lone Working and Allegations Management.
