Early Years Designated Safeguarding Lead Refresher 2025-26

Audience: Designated DSLs and Deputies in Early Years Provision

This E-learning course has been developed by the LADO Education Safeguarding Advisory Service to enable experienced Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL) and Deputy DSLs in early years settings in Kent to refresh their knowledge and skills and meet the welfare requirement as outlined in ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’ and the ‘Early Years and Foundation Stage’.

This course explores specific procedures and support available in Kent, including Integrated Children’s Services and the ‘Front Door’.

DSLs working in early years settings outside of Kent can access this course, however, they will need to undertake independent research to ensure they understand their own local guidance and processes.

Please note:

  • Your licence for the course lasts until 31 August 2026.
  • The course should take three to four hours to complete.
  • The current version of this course is in line with Annex C of the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ Statutory Framework 2025.

  • To revise and update your knowledge of national legislation and guidance pertaining to safeguarding children.
  • To revisit and deepen your understanding of the safeguarding responsibilities of early years settings, in line with the statutory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework.
  • To revisit and reflect on your role and responsibilities as a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and to evaluate safeguarding practices within your setting.
  • To explore local child protection procedures and how to liaise with and refer to local statutory children's services agencies, including escalating concerns in line with the local safeguarding partnership arrangements.
    To explore key safeguarding risks and issues, with a focus on recognising specific forms of abuse and understanding the vulnerabilities that may increase a child’s risk or harm.
  • To explore guidance and consider best practice to support settings in building a child safe organisation, including staff code of conduct, safer recruitment practices and managing allegations of abuse against staff.
  • To strengthen your understanding of internet (online) safety, enabling you to promote safe and age-appropriate internet use and respond effectively to any online safety concerns.
  • Be reminded of the role and responsibilities held by a Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy DSL in an early years provision.
  • Revisit and update your knowledge of national legislation and guidance pertaining to safeguarding children in early years settings.
  • Revisit multi-agency working, including the local Kent’s specific child protection procedures, making referrals and escalation.
  • Reflect, analyse and improve the safeguarding practice within their setting, including building a safe organisational culture, implementing safeguarding policies and procedures, safer recruitment and managing allegations against staff.
  • To improve knowledge of internet/online safety.
