Whole School Safeguarding Training Pack for DSLs 2025-26

This resource is to support DSLs in schools provide staff training themselves whilst following national guidance and local Kent processes.

The statutory guidance, ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ (KCSIE) states that all staff working in schools and colleges should complete safeguarding and child protection training. This training should be delivered during induction and regularly updated in accordance with advice from the local safeguarding partners. Additionally, staff must receive ongoing safeguarding and child protection updates as necessary, and at least annually, to ensure they possess the relevant skills and knowledge to safeguard children effectively.

To assist Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) in delivering staff training aligned with national guidance and local Kent processes, the LADO Education Safeguarding Advisory Service (LESAS) has developed a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation template accompanied by a supplementary guidance document and additional resources, including training materials, a staff quiz, and an induction leaflet.

While some materials are tailored to Kent schools in accordance with Kent Safeguarding Children Multi-Agency Partnership (KSCMP) procedures, schools and colleges outside Kent may also utilise the content, adapting slides to reflect their respective local procedures. This training pack should be used and delivered exclusively by a suitably trained DSL, ideally the lead DSL, and is intended for internal use within individual schools/colleges.

The contents are based on the KCSIE 2025 guidance published in July 2025 for use during the 2025-26 academic year. DSLs should check for any content updates prior to delivery.

The pack offers DSLs in schools an easy-to-use PowerPoint template that can be customised to fit their context and schedule.
The presentation aligns with statutory guidance, including 'Keeping Children Safe in Education,' and Kent processes. It comes with an optional script, suggested activities to support staff learning, and should be customised to match school/college policies.

Key content includes:

  • key legislation and updates
  • categories and indicators of abuse and neglect
  • safe culture, including allegations and whistleblowing
  • what to do if staff are concerned about a child
  • local support and processes, including the Kent Support Levels Guidance
  • safeguarding priorities, as identified in Annex B of KCSIE
  • online safety.

To further support DSLs in delivering staff training, LESAS have also produced a helpful guidance document with supporting material and useful background information. The guidance document includes suggestions to create a safe environment for training delivery and contains a variety of activities which can be used in longer training sessions or to provide staff updates throughout the year.

This pack will enable DSLs to be confident that their staff have the relevant safeguarding and child protection skills and knowledge required and that they understand the expectations and procedures in place within their school/college.

These resources will assist DSLs deliver up-to-date staff training and will help ensure that their school/college is a safe place for children and staff.
