Honour Based violence, Forced Marriage and Female Genital Mutilation - Trafficked and exploited children - awareness for foster carers

This course provides foster carers with essential awareness and understanding of honour-based abuse, forced marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), and the experiences of trafficked and exploited children.

These forms of abuse remain largely hidden due to cultural beliefs, family pressures, and community dynamics, yet they represent significant safeguarding concerns for children and young people in the UK.

As forthcoming legislation places these crime types on a recognised statutory footing, it is vital that carers understand both the legal framework and their responsibilities.

The course introduces key statutory guidance, explores the concept of “honour” and how it shapes risk, and supports carers in developing cultural competence when caring for children from communities where honour is a deeply embedded value.

This training equips carers with the awareness and confidence needed to identify concerns, respond appropriately, and provide safe, informed, and sensitive care.
