Improving the Quality of School’s Budget Monitoring

Brief overview

The course will provide an opportunity for school staff to work together on practical, and theory, based activities, to ensure that the monitoring completed at the school is as accurate as possible, and fully explained when presenting the information to others.

There will be discussions around the roles and responsibilities when monitoring communication and improving the effectiveness of monitoring at the school or academy. There will be an opportunity to share good practice during feedback to the group.

Please note:  this is a theory based course and does not provide training on the use of the Budget Planning Software. 

Learning outcomes

  • Understand requirements and responsibilities for monitoring a budget.
  • Answer questions on monitoring a school’s budget, using example information.
  • Understand what information needs to be reviewed and where amendments to the forecasted income and expenditure may be required.
  • Ensure that the school’s own forecast figures are presented, including providing an explanation of any virements and variances.
  • Recognise the links between monitoring a school’s budget and budget strategy, including a change in a staffing structure.
  • Link major changes in the year end forecast back to the 3 year planning process.
  • Challenge the information presented on a monitoring report.
