Session 4 - What Headteachers Need To Know About Governance with Tina Gimber and Lorraine Monkhouse

This session is part of the KCC Induction programme which is a key component of the Kent Leadership Strategy and an important way of supporting leaders’ development.  The programme is aimed at all new Headteachers in Kent and is relevant to Primary, Secondary and Special Schools.

The induction programme consists of six sessions delivered across the academic year. It is flexible, allowing Headteachers to join at any point over the year. Each session offers focused training delivered by an expert speaker on an aspect of school leadership and management, opportunities to ask questions and explore issues linked to your school, an informal tour around a host schools, ‘hot topic’ input and discussion, and opportunities to network with colleagues.

Learning outcomes

The understanding governance session, relevant to headteachers from the maintained and academy sectors, will focus on:

  • The purpose and functions of governance, including the governor’s strategic role with an understanding of the division between strategic and operational.
  • Effective governance; how it works, different models of governance including those within academy trusts and how the board at all levels holds the headteacher to account.
  • Building a strong professional relationship with your governing board, including the key relationships you will have with the chair, clerk and governance team.
