Course Overview – Understanding Adolescent Risk-Taking

Audience: Foster Carers of Adolescents (11–18 years)

This course equips foster carers with practical skills to understand and respond to risk-taking behaviours in adolescence. Through an interactive workshop approach including case studies, reflective tasks and scenarios, foster carers will learn to recognise common patterns of risk, balance safeguarding with autonomy, and respond proportionately with clear protective steps.

Adolescent brain development is a key focus, highlighting how it drives risk, reward-seeking and peer influence. The course will translate neuroscience evidence into everyday strategies to de-escalate high-risk situations and respond to all types of risk-taking behaviours in adolescence.
