Writing in Action - Year R and Year 1 Writing Project

Live training for primary education
Multiple sessions
  • Foundation
  • Key Stage 1

About this course

Be a part of this exciting action research project, taking place over six sessions throughout 2026 – 2027, to raise outcomes, and close gaps in writing.

Sessions will be a mix of face to face (whole day and half days) and online(twilights). You will be working alongside and with Jan Dubiel.

The project is for either Year R and Year 1 teachers, or both, although all staff are welcome to join us for the online twilights, especially English leaders.

This project will run from September 2026 to July 2027.

What you'll take away

Our supportive sessions will include guidance and time to:

  • understand and use relevant research to begin to construct a curriculum to support writing from 2 yrs to the end of Year 1
  • define what we mean by a successful writer by the end of the Reception year and how to support a successful transition to Year 1
  • look at the profiles of children and who did and didn't achieve the writing ELG and how to use this information to plan effectively in Year 1
  • identify possible barriers to children and explore solutions
  • target there and then those who are at risk by devising specific strategies to support them
  • build and share pedagogical strategies to use as a resource.
