Supporting children beyond the school day: how wraparound childcare helps families thrive

For many families, the hours before and after school can be the most challenging part of the day and parents often find themselves juggling drop‑offs and pick‑ups. To help this, the Government has committed funding to expand wraparound childcare for primary school‑aged children. This means more schools and local providers will be able to offer childcare typically from 8am until 6pm, giving families more flexibility and children more opportunities to learn, play and thrive beyond the school day.

Wraparound childcare refers to supervised childcare that takes place before and after the school day, during term time. It can be delivered in various settings such as:

• on a school site
• by local nurseries
• by standalone out‑of‑school providers
• by registered childminders.

Sessions typically include breakfast clubs, after‑school clubs, enrichment activities, and opportunities for children to socialise, and build confidence in a safe environment.

The Education People, in partnership with Kent County Council, is working closely with schools and childcare providers to increase the number of wraparound childcare places across Kent (please note that this does not include Medway, which is a unitary authority).

This expansion aims to ensure that more families can access reliable, affordable childcare that fits around their working patterns, training commitments, or personal circumstances.

While wraparound childcare is paid for by parents and carers, many families are surprised to learn that they may be eligible for financial support. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to use:

• Tax‑Free Childcare – reducing your childcare costs by 20%
• Universal Credit Childcare – covering up to 85% of childcare costs

These schemes can make a huge difference for families and open opportunities for parents to work, study, or simply find a better balance.
